Ambulance and Student Paramedic
To work as an Ambulance Driver or train as a Paramedic, you are required to meet Group 2 medical standards, as set out by the DVLA. A medical assessment is required before starting your role or training, and further assessments may be needed depending on your employer’s occupational health policy.
Most ambulance trusts and training providers require a full medical examination to confirm you meet the fitness and vision standards for driving emergency vehicles. Some employers will provide their own medical assessment forms, while others use the standard DVLA D4 form.
Please check with your employer or training organisation to confirm which form is required and bring this with you to your appointment. If a specific form is not provided, the assessment will be carried out using the D4 template, and if you meet the required standard, we will issue a medical certificate.
If you are currently under medical review for any condition that may affect your fitness to drive, you may be asked to provide additional information or evidence from your GP or specialist. We will advise you of this during your appointment.
Should you not meet the standard on the day, we will offer guidance on the next steps and provide a free retest once the required recommendations have been addressed.
